About BCI

Background

Tyana Wills is to left and My'Anna Williams is to the right. We met our freshman year of high school and from that moment we met, we realized that we had a lot in common. We both grew up with incarcerated parents and we both lost our fathers to cancer. Most of our conversations included our childhoods, though our stories we different, we could relate to one another.

We attended the Entrepreneurship and Business Academy at Kempsville High school and in the academy is were started our nonprofit organization. With many doors that were shut in our faces, we learned how to persevere and continue to work towards the goal of establishing BCI. We understood the need for something like BCI, there are many children in this world, right in our neighborhoods, that can relate to what it feels like to be a child without an outlet or guidance.

More About BCI

BCI is a nonprofit organization for children ages 10 to 16 with incarcerated parents. BCI stands for Building trustful relationships, Creating caring environments, and Inspiring them to be better than what is expected. At BCI we want to provide an outlet and guidance for children with incarcerated parents, growing up without your parents is a difficult situation and most children live or lived in crucial circumstances. For most children, they are expected to become a statistic and end up in the system just as their parents did, but at BCI we encourage young individuals to make decisions that are prominent to their future.

We have created BCI based on our personal experience with growing up with incarcerated parents. From our own personal experience, we understand the need for an organization like BCI. The children are responsible for the future and having an influence on children who are put into circumstances they cannot necessarily control, we want to embed into them that life is beyond incarceration or being another child who follows in their parent’s footprints. BCI wants to provide support to young individuals who have grown up without their parents because of the incarceration system.

Our Passion

Our passion derive from our personal experience. From those circumstances that we had to endure, we have grown to want to inspire the youth and allow us to help the children to understand that there is a different side of life that happens, life is not based on your parents' experiences and decisions. To try and prevent children from going into the system is our main goal, whether we influence 30 children or 1 child.
